If you have been quoted for fibre optic splicing and are wondering whether plain cabling would do, you are asking the right question. The two jobs solve different problems, and paying for splicing you do not need is a common way to overspend. Here is how to work out which one your situation actually calls for.
Cabling means installing the physical cables themselves, whether that is copper Ethernet such as Cat6 or Cat6a, or a run of fibre optic cable. Splicing is a separate, specialist step: permanently joining two fibre strands together using a fusion splicer, a machine that melts the glass cores so light passes through with almost no loss.
For most homes, you only need cabling. If you want wired internet points in a few rooms, a connection out to a garden office, or a tidy home network, copper Ethernet handles all of it. Cat6a comfortably carries 10 gigabits per second up to 100 metres, which is faster than almost any home broadband package sold in the UK today. Splicing only enters the picture when fibre itself has to be cut, extended, repaired or terminated.
Copper Ethernet is cheaper to install, easier to repair and simple to plug devices into. A typical single Cat6 run in an Edinburgh tenement or a semi in Newcastle sits somewhere in the region of 100 to 200 pounds installed, depending on access, wall construction and how far the cable has to travel. Multiple runs done in one visit usually work out cheaper per point.
Distance is the main technical limit. Ethernet is reliable up to 100 metres per run, and very few domestic jobs come close to that. If everything you are connecting sits within the house or a nearby outbuilding, fibre is usually unnecessary.
Splicing becomes relevant when fibre optic cable is already part of the job. The most common domestic case is damage: a full fibre broadband lead from Openreach, CityFibre or another provider gets cut during garden work, a driveway dig or a renovation. If the damaged section belongs to your provider, report it to them first, as they usually repair their own network up to the point it enters your home. Damage on your side of that point, or to a private run you had installed, is where an independent splicing service comes in.
The other case is distance or environment. A detached workshop, stables or an annexe more than 100 metres from the house is beyond what copper can reach in one run, so a fibre link with spliced or factory terminated ends is the right tool. Fibre is also immune to electrical interference, which matters if a cable route passes near mains distribution or machinery. Rural properties in the Borders, Northumberland and the Lothians are the usual candidates here, where outbuildings genuinely are a long way from the router.
Splicing needs a fusion splicer and an OTDR or light source tester, equipment costing several thousand pounds, plus the training to use it, which is why it is priced differently from general cabling. A straightforward domestic fibre repair with a couple of fusion splices often lands in the low hundreds of pounds, while a new fibre link to an outbuilding depends heavily on trenching, ducting and distance, so quotes vary widely and a site visit is usually needed before anyone can give you a firm figure.
Be wary of anyone quoting fibre and splicing for a job that a 30 metre copper run would solve, and equally wary of anyone offering to fix cut fibre with tape or a twist connector, which does not work. Glass cores are thinner than a human hair and only a proper fusion or mechanical splice will restore the connection.
Ask yourself three things: how far does the connection need to go, is existing fibre involved, and what speeds do you genuinely need? Under 100 metres, no damaged fibre and normal household speeds means cabling. Over 100 metres, a cut fibre lead, or interference prone routes means splicing is likely justified.
A reputable installer will ask about distances and what you are connecting before recommending either. If the first thing you hear is a push towards fibre for a three bedroom house with a garden office ten metres away, get a second opinion.
Realistically no. Fibre cores must be cleaved and fusion spliced with specialist equipment, and a poor joint will block or badly degrade the signal. If it is your broadband provider's cable, contact them first as the repair may be their responsibility at no cost to you.
Not in any way you would notice. Cat6a copper carries 10 gigabits per second over domestic distances, which exceeds virtually every UK home broadband package. Fibre's advantages are distance beyond 100 metres and immunity to electrical interference, not everyday speed.
Report it to your broadband provider first, since the network up to your home entry point normally belongs to them or Openreach and they repair their own kit. If the damage is to cabling on your side of that point, an independent engineer with fusion splicing equipment can repair it.
